How to Prepare for the First ABA session
It’s time for back to school, and with back to school, there comes a need for new services.
If your child is starting ABA, this is probably a difficult time for your family, but it’s going to be great.
ABA can be done anywhere, so don’t stress too much about having anything ready. If you like, it may be helpful to have a playroom or space where the child can meet with the RBT and BCBA. If services are being conducted in school or daycare, make sure the school has all of the necessary documents, and information about what will go on.
The BCBA will come first and do an assessment. Although we try to be as affirming as possible, we are there to help, so don’t be afraid to share the difficult things.
Based on your child’s level of understanding, prepare them that they will meet new people and they are going to have so much fun! Our goal is to make sure they are having fun, so they don’t even know they are in therapy.
When the therapist arrives, they may bring some toys for your child to play with, but the ultimate goal is for the child to be able to interact in the natural environment, so over time, these fun new novel toys, should be faded to creative ideas with things you already have.
Don’t be afraid to come and go in session as you feel comfortable. Our goal is to create an ABA environment, where you are always welcome to learn, and generalize skills, but don’t feel like you have to be in the room the whole time either.
ABA should be a positive experience for everyone and BCBAs and RBTS are always accepting of feedback! First days are exciting and we would be delighted to share one with your child.
